How to Choose a Roof Color

Updated: Jul 26, 2021

Choosing a shingle color for your new roof can be overwhelming. The roof color doesn't only change the look of your home but can have other effects as well. Here are some things to consider when choosing your new shingles.

Local Climate

Is your local climate warm or cold a majority of the year? Choosing a light colored shingle will keep your home cool in warm weather while a dark shingle will keep your home warmer in areas with cold weather. Keeping the local climate in mind when choosing your roof color could save you money on utilities in the long run.

Exterior of Home

What is the color scheme of the exterior of your home? Take a good look at your home's exterior elements such as front door, shutters, garage, and siding color. Think about what color roof would complement your home's color scheme best. For example in the picture below, the taupe siding and white trim are complemented well by the gray/taupe tones of the roof shingles.

Architectural Style

The size and design of your home are important things to consider when choosing your shingle colors. Smaller homes look better and appear larger with lighter colored shingles, while a dark roof would have the opposite effect.
